Background on the region

The Fraser Coast is where nature comes alive and is about a three hours' drive or 50-minute flight from the state capital of Brisbane. Even experienced travellers will be inspired by the region's gem, Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island which is known as K'gari by the local Butchulla people.

Wonder at the blue hues in Lake Mckenzie, gaze up at the ancient rainforest trees and float down Eli Creek. You can then discover why Hervey Bay is one of the best places in the world to enjoy incredible humpback whale encounters where you can make eye contact and swim with these gentle giants. Enjoy the delights offered by Hervey Bay's safe beaches and indigenous-led marine tours.

Uncover the wonders of the southern Great Barrier Reef on Lady Elliot Island - a short flight from Hervey Bay. You can also stroll through the heritage-filled streets of Maryborough to uncover its link to Mary Poppins and distinguished military history.
